Beta Volunteer Post and General Cheerleading
Please comment here to request a beta or volunteer your services as a beta. You may want to include the following things in your comment:
1. What kind of story you're writing (girlslash, boyslash, het, gen, characters, rating).
2. What kind of beta you're looking for (plot, story, characterization, grammar, style, etc.)
3. What kind of beta you can provide.
4. Links to previous stories you've written.
5. When you plan to be ready with your rough draft.
Any other information you want to provide is fine too.
Folks, remember that we're trying to keep beta/audiencing groups smallish, so that the surprise is greater when the stories are revealed--but don't let that stop you from asking for support from our beta volunteers as necessary. They're there for you.
If you'd like to be a cheerleader, post here as well! Writers need plenty of encouragement. If you'd like to be someone writers can go to for a general pick-me-up or handholding, let us know here. Writers, if you're stuck and need to flail at someone who'll listen, ask one of our cheerleaders.

I mostly read and write slash (boys and girls), so would prefer to beta that.
I can be slow with the turn-around, but I'll usually try to send a note along to say I won't be able to respond in depth for a few days.
If you want to know what kind of things I write, my index can be found here. (http://starlingthefool.livejournal.com/30146.html") All my fanfic is unlocked.
I can be reached at nyquilsucks (at) yahoo (dot) com.

offering beta service
2. What kind of beta you are
looking for: It depends on what you'd like... I'm very good with basic grammar/spelling/style beta, but I can do more if you'd like.3. What kind of beta you can provide. -Um, see above.
4. Links to previous stories you've written.
5. When you plan to be ready with your rough draft. -Er, I'm available mostly during the week, and I try to give a quick turn-around, no more than 3 days. If more, I'll let you know.
I will offer my beta skills...
Please explain.

But I'd also like to sign up for cheerleading. I'll make up a dance and all ;)

1. What kind of story you're writing (girlslash, boyslash, het, gen, characters, rating) Gen at first, then some het later on. Warning for major character death, so R, I suspect. I'm not usually into really explicit sex scenes, so I doubt it will spill over into NC-17, but I'm not hemming my Muse in at this point, so be prepared for anything.... :-D
2. What kind of beta you're looking for (plot, story, characterization, grammar, style, etc.) In DESPERATE need of a medical beta, with oncology knowledge preferred. And if my regular beta doesn't have time to deal w/a multi-chaptered fic, I will need an editing-oriented beta as well, with an emphasis on characterization and keeping my style from getting too out there (POV and too many ellipses seem to be my weak points, as well as the occasional run-on sentence.).
3. What kind of beta you can provide. I would hesitate to offer my services as a primary beta, with all the stories, both fan-fic and orig-fic, that I already have obligations to, but if there is a moment of stuckness, or something else equally quick, I will be happy to do what I can.
I can cheerlead as well, but be warned, I am honest. I will put the needs of the Story first. Pretty much always. I find positive ways to say the things that I feel need to be said, but if I do feel there is something that needs to be dealt with, I will not count it a favor to either party to leave it. However, fear not, saying it gently and appropriately is of primary importance to me as well. And for any reference that may be needed, that's how I like my cheerleading done as well.
4. Links to previous stories you've written. My LJ is currently your best source. Look for the cane-in-the-sky icon or follow the 'house' tag for the House-fic. (Ignore the first-reading copies, unless you want to see what you need to guard against, as it were. :lol)
5. When you plan to be ready with your rough draft. Before the deadline? :-D Seriously, tho', need to get a bit of S4 under my belt to get the rest of the setting, and to acquire and read the research books I do have in mind to get a flavor for the situation. I have parts of it already done, bits and pieces that the Muse has revealed to me, which I can send to folk as needed. I suspect that after I get that baseline background down, it will flow quite quickly. (I hope. :lol)
I also have no idea how long this will actually end up being to be done properly. I suspect it may well end up being more novel-length, than novella-length, but we shall see.
Thank'ee's to all who volunteer, in whatever capacity! This is looking to be immense amounts of fun! :-)

1. What kind of story you're writing (girlslash, boyslash, het, gen, characters, rating). I'm going to be writing pretty much gen, but possible boyslash with tiny bits of het. It's mostly a friendship fic.
2. What kind of beta you're looking for (plot, story, characterization, grammar, style, etc.) I need charaterisation help and general grammar (tense/word choice).
3. What kind of beta you can provide. I'm a very thorough style/grammar beta. I need continuity to breathe, so that's my main focus.
4. Links to previous stories you've written. Take a look-see through my journal. (I'm gonna start posting some of my original work soon, but you'll have to be friended first).
5. When you plan to be ready with your rough draft. The day it's due. XD No, but close to the due date, so I'll probably need a quick beta.
I may be a slow reader, but I'm a quick thinker. :3

House/Wilson/Cuddy with baby. Only other canon character who figures prominently is Chase. PG-13 except for one chapter of NC-17.
2. What kind of beta you're looking for (plot, story, characterization, grammar, style, etc.)
Characterization, particularly character development on the OC. Continuity is greatly appreciated too.
3. What kind of beta you can provide.
I'm particularly good on grammar and style. I'm very honest when it comes to fiction, so cheerleading is not really my thing.
4. Links to previous stories you've written.
The whole shebang. Heaven's Only Daughter, Rhythm of the Saints, and My Father's Old Coat are a must, since they're the same universe. See tags for more info.
5. When you plan to be ready with your rough draft.
Chapters will be done probably twice a month, full draft should be live at the beginning of February.

I should be able to do cheerleading now, especially since I'm doing for myself right now anyway. :)
1. Ahahahah-- um. There is sex/gender-switching, so although both members of the main couple think of themselves as male, one of them is physically a female. In my head it's slash, only with girl parts.
2. Story & characterization especially-- grammar is a great bonus but not necessary.
3. Characterization critique and pondering of themes & story structure.
4. My other House fic.
5. Oh-- somewhere between mid-October and the end of November.
How does this work-- do we get assigned a beta or do we just write to them ourselves and beg?
Beta required for Nero Wolfe crossover fic
A House/Nero Wolfe crossover. Like, there's a murder, I guess, and Wilson gets arrested and House hires Wolfe (because that's how these things usually begin) (and I can't think of any other way to get House/anyone else to NYC) and Archie has to go to Jersey and is all "WHY?" and he doesn't like House, and isn't working for him, he's working for Wolfe, which he has to keep reminding House of, who of course doesn't listen, and there is snarky-ness and ego-ness and Wolfe doesn't trust cellphones.
Such a fic will of course need to be written in first person Archie Goodwin. (It will also be House/Wilson established relationship, because I can't write anything else, but done in a subtle way through Archie's eyes).
So I need a beta who:
- Has read enough Nero Wolfe to give me a steer on my Archie-voice. Or lack of. I have no idea if I can do anything even close yet. Not just the tone, but also knowledge of the brownstone, New York, etc. I have loved Nero Wolfe for many years and have all the books but...
- Can also put me right on Americanisms, as I'm a Brit.
- Can correct me on grammar, and especially the difference between it's and its. (If in doubt I leave it out).
This sounds like a tall order, so if there's anyone out there who can just do the Nero Wolfe bit, perhaps you could get in touch anyway? - and then maybe I can try and get someone else to do general beta stuff. All my fic is on my LJ, all readily linked from the first post, and my email address is there under my profile.
I already have a plot for this sketched out - the plot bunny bit me bad - so its just a matter of getting down to actually writing it (just, hah). RL permitting, I'm intending to try and get a couple of chapters drafted within a month or so, and would then appreciate beta feedback as to whether I should carry on. If this one falls flat on its face I'm still going to do BigBang - I'll still have my original idea which I already started writing (House/Wilson where Wilson meets the possible future 4th Mrs Wilson who turns out to be a bit of a voyeur. And if anyone likes the sound of that one, do volunteer to beta that too!)
*fingers crossed*
Re: Beta required for Nero Wolfe crossover fic
It's v. its... if you can put the words 'it is' in the place of the 'it's' - use the apostrophe. If you can't, don't.
It's cold outside.
The coat had its attached hood removed.
Hope you can pull your story off - I LOVE Nero Wolfe! :-)
Could probably do your initial beta if you still need it. As I said above, don't know how much good I'll be for more than drive-bys past that.

Re: Beta required for Nero Wolfe crossover fic
V happy to hear of another Nero Wolfe fan out there (I do wonder how many people will actually read this at the end of it all!) - I have had another offer for initial Wolfean beta'ing but thank-you v much for offering.
Looking for beta
For the first time ever, I'm hoping to have one of my stories betaed...
It's a House/Cam fic that begins with Cameron's death, and strongly features a ghost/hallucination Cameron. It'll be rated R because of heavy drinking, drug use(it is a House fanfic, after all), heavy use of bad words in dialogue, some illegal behavior, and character death, but there will be no sex.
The good news is that I'm good with spelling and grammar, and most grammar errors I do have will be intentional, stylistically. The bad news is that I'm horrible at self-editing, and have occasionally made very bad mistakes like switching from second-person to third-person two-thirds of the way through a story. I'm happy to fix these, but I need someone else to point them out. I will also need to know if my Cameron-voice needs correcting.
I hope to have a draft done before November - because if I don't have it done by then, I'm screwed. I'm half-finished outlining and have finished writing several scenes, and I started three days ago, so I think I'm good. I'd be happy to comply with my beta's wishes about sending the fic to them - I'd planned to send it in full as soon as I finished, because I'm not writing it in reading order, but if the beta wants me to send it some other way, that's fine.
I really don't want this to suck, but I just don't have the time or energy to self-edit this. Please help.

I'll probably e-mail a couple of the lovely folks who've already offered to be betas in the thread. But, just in case, I thought I'd put my info down here, too:
1. What kind of story is it?
AU/supernatural. Focus is mostly on House and Wilson, with alternating points of view. I'm trying to be vague, here, but I'm basically taking a crack!fic concept and playing it dead serious. Gen, strong friendship. R-rated for language, adult themes, and some moderate violence. The tone will (hopefully) be slightly, but not overly angsty. May end up featuring character death, but probably nothing else that might be squicky to readers.
2. What kind of beta am I looking for?
I'm pretty solid on grammar and spelling - I've worked as a professional editor - so I will need help primarily with readability, some style and minor plot stuff, characterization, and canon-checking. I need someone who's going to be tough. You don't need to pull your punches. I can handle it.
3. Links to stuff I've written:
I've only written one other piece of fanfiction and it's in the X-Men universe. Here's a link to the first bits: http://community.livejournal.com/xmmff/143439.html I don't think my style has changed that much, so you can probably expect more of the same.
4. When do you plan to be ready with a rough draft?
The whole thing? Hopefully before February. But, for now, I've got about 3,000 words. That's about half of the first section (there will be three sections, total), though everything's already plotted out and I tend to get wordy. So, I'm expecting to have the first section finished and ready for a beta in the next couple of weeks.
If you're interested just drop me a note at bluefootedb@gmail.com
Beta will be rewarded with much thanks and praise and probably free art - just not of the porn variety ;)

I'm quite busy with RL at the moment, and as such I won't be available until mid-November. I'd be very happy to correspond by email or use Google Docs. I read, ask questions, and correct grammar. I can provide information. I like research, and I've done a lot of it.
I think I'm an okay beta. : ) I have a short attention span, but a good eye for detail. You can expect a solid critique, and I like to help writers make their work easier to read.
Interested? You can email me at armchair.elvis at gmail dot com.

... mostly.
Still a med student, but nearly done (third year! yay!) -- I'm also really busy, but if two of us share the work it'll probably work better, eh?
*offers to beta*
I read House/Wilson fic far more than I read other type of fic, but I will read slash, gen, or het. If it's characterisation woes, though, House and Wilson are the two characters I know the best.
I've beta'd long fics for both
If interested, I can be reached at padfootwolfboy at gmail dot com.
